A court in Afghanistan's Faryab province ordered a public flogging of a woman who had an extramarital affair and ran away from home, DPA reported, quoted by BTA, referring to a statement by the Supreme Court of the Taliban in Afghanistan.
The text states that the woman received a punishment of 30 lashes and six months in prison.
In Afghanistan, any sexual relationship outside of marriage is illegal. Girls who run away from home in most cases face severe punishments from the family.
In a separate case over the weekend, two people in the southern province of Kandahar were publicly flogged for sodomy, a court said. Both were given 30 lashes and sentences of one year in prison each.
After the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan, corporal punishment, including executions and public flogging, was reintroduced for crimes such as murder, robbery and adultery.
The UN has criticized the Taliban's use of such punishments, saying they violate the UN Convention against Torture, and has called for an end to the practice. The Taliban rejected the criticism, saying that this form of punishment was in accordance with the country's laws and was necessary to ensure the security and safety of citizens, DPA noted.
