Palm Sunday, also known as Vrabnitsa, is one of the most colorful and revered holidays in the Bulgarian calendar, which brings with it the magic of spring, the wealth of folk customs and sincere respect for nature and life. The holiday marks the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem and for Christians is a symbol of reborn life, new beginnings and purification - it marks the beginning of the Passion Week, in which Christ will be betrayed, crucified, but also resurrected on the third day after his death.

What we need to know about Palm Sunday?

Palm Sunday is always on the Sunday before Easter and is loved by everyone because of the beautiful tradition with flowers. According to folk belief, the consecrated willow branches, which are distributed in churches on this day, possess magical power and protect the home from evil throughout the year. People place them on the home iconostasis or on the front doors, believing that this will protect them from illness and bad luck.

Folk beliefs on Palm Sunday

According to beliefs, on Palm Sunday, everyone named after flowers and trees celebrates their name day. The holiday is filled with rituals for health, well-being and fertility. Young girls weave wreaths of willow and flowers, which they throw into the river, guessing about their future husband – Wherever the wreath flows, there the chosen one will come.

Especially interesting is the belief that on Palm Sunday the samodives begin to perform their dances, seducing and kidnapping young men. That is why people avoid walking alone in the forests and fields, so as not to fall into danger from the magical attraction of the samodivs.

  • In Rhodopes, large village celebrations are organized, at which specific local songs are sung and ritual folk dances are performed. There, the flowers have a special symbolism and each one of them means a different wish.

  • In some regions of Southern Bulgaria, the rite of “kumichene“ is performed, in which young women throw their wreaths into the water, and the one whose wreath is ahead of the others becomes “kumitsa“ for the year – she is honored with great respect by the other girls.
