London police have charged American singer Chris Brown, who was arrested in Manchester on May 15 on suspicion of assaulting a man in February 2023.
“Chris Brown, 36 (born May 5, 1989), a US citizen, was charged on Thursday, May 15, with causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He remains in custody and is due to appear at Manchester Magistrates' Court at 10am on Friday, May 16“, Scotland Yard said in a statement.
“The charge relates to an assault which reportedly took place at a business in Hanover Square, London, on Sunday, February 19, 2023“, police added.
According to the newspaper “The Guardian“, it concerns an incident in which Brown hit music producer Abe Diaw several times with a bottle, then continued to beat his opponent, who was already lying on the floor.
Diaw has sued Brown for 12 million British pounds ($16 million).
The musician was detained after arriving in Manchester on a private jet on Thursday night. Brown was due to begin a European tour on June 8 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his debut album “Chris Brown“. After the Amsterdam concert, he planned to perform in Manchester, Cardiff, London, Birmingham and Glasgow.
In 2009, Brown was already sentenced to 5 years probation and 6 months of community service for assaulting his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna.
Brown is an R&B singer. In 2012, he received a “Grammy“ award for his album F.A.M.E. In 2013, his album Fortune was nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album.
