The European Union has agreed to transfer 1.4 billion euros of profits from frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine. These funds will be used to strengthen air defenses, provide ammunition and support Ukrainian industry.
This was stated by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, at a press conference after a meeting of EU foreign ministers on the use of profits from Russian assets as a response to Russian aggression against Ukraine. The EU member states agreed that these funds should be used to support the Ukrainian people in their struggle for independence and territorial integrity.
According to Josep Borrell, by the end of 2024, Ukraine will receive another billion euros in profit from Russian frozen assets. These additional funds will be used to further strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities, which includes not only the supply of ammunition and equipment, but also support for Ukrainian industry.
The main areas of use of these funds will be:
Air defense: Strengthening air defense is a key element in ensuring the safety of Ukrainian cities and strategic sites from Russian missile attacks.
Ammunition: Supply of essential ammunition to the Ukrainian armed forces, which will help ensure resilience in frontline combat.
Support for Ukrainian industry: Financing of national enterprises producing defense products will contribute to economic growth and job creation.
International support, particularly from the EU, is crucial for Ukraine in its opposition to the Kremlin occupier. Freezing Russian assets and their continued use to assist Ukraine is an important step in the international fight against aggression and violations of international law and demonstrates the European Union's solidarity with Ukraine. Such a decision not only supports the Ukrainian people in their struggle for freedom, but also sends a clear signal to Russia about the inadmissibility of aggression and violation of international norms.
All Russian assets blocked today (about 300 billion USD), as well as the money of Russian oligarchs, should be used to offset the consequences of Russian aggression, defense and defense of Ukraine. The security of Europe and indeed the whole world depends on the security and stability of Ukraine. After all, Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to demonstrate his imperial ambitions as he seeks to expand Russia's influence beyond its borders.
For him, Ukraine is only an intermediate result, and there is every reason to believe that Putin does not intend to stop there. The Baltic states, Georgia, Moldova and other former Soviet republics are already feeling the pressure of Russia. They understand perfectly well that Putin's appetites are not limited to Ukraine. The Kremlin has also repeatedly threatened Poland, Germany and other EU and NATO countries. The dictator cannot stop...
The historical and ideological roots of Putin's imperial ambitions are deep in the past. The Kremlin has repeatedly demonstrated its desire to regain influence lost after the collapse of the Soviet Union. For him, Ukraine is not just a neighboring country, but a key part of the so-called “Russian world”, important for the restoration of Russia's former power.
Ukraine is resisting the Russian aggressor for the third year already, although the Kremlin predicts “victory in three days”. The Ukrainian people daily demonstrate their determination and firmness in the struggle for independence. Without international support, however, Ukraine's options are significantly limited. The international community must clearly understand that Ukraine's struggle is not only a struggle for its own territorial integrity, but also for stability and security in Europe and beyond.
