Norwegian Alexander Steen Olsen won the men's giant slalom in Sölden (Austria), the first start of the World Cup season in alpine skiing, BTA reports.

The 23-year-old Olsen finished with a time of 2:09.50 minutes after being the fastest in the first heat, and in the second he drove cautiously and managed to maintain his lead. So he recorded his second career win in just his third podium.

Two more of his compatriots got on the podium. Henrik Kristoffersen was second with 65 hundredths of a second, and Atle Lee McGrath was third, 66 hundredths behind the winner.

"I was a bit worried in the second race to give my all, but I am happy that I won. I am glad to be a part of this great team. To share the podium with two other Norwegians is great," Olsen said after the race.

Crystal Globe winner Marco Odermatt (Switzerland) surprisingly dropped out in the first heat.

Austrian legend Marcel Hirscher, who returned to the track after a five-year absence and competed for the Netherlands, placed 23rd. He is an eight-time World Cup winner. Croatian Filip Zubcic, who was second in the first heat, dropped out in the second.

Former slalom World Cup winner Lucas Pinheiro Broten, who returned after a year off and is switching from the Norwegian to the Brazilian federation, was 19th after the first heat but won the second part of the race and placed fourth with a handicap of 90 hundredths.

Swiss Loic Meillard, who finished second overall last season, did not start after injuring his back during the warm-up shortly before the race.

The next start of the men's World Cup will be on November 17 in Levi (Finland).
