Bulgaria's top seed in women's tennis Victoria Tomova missed six match points and was eliminated very dramatically in the first round of the grass tennis tournament in Eastbourne, England, BNR reported.
She lost 1:6, 7:6(5), 6:7(7) against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia after two hours and 39 minutes of play.
The 30-year-old Tomova allowed breaks in the second and sixth games of the first set and lost 1:6.
In the second part of the match, the Bulgarian tennis player quickly led 3:0 and 4:2, but allowed a tie to 4:4. The Russian, ranked 53rd in the world, made another break and then served to win the match, but Victoria Tomova saved a match point and achieved a break for 5:5.
In the tiebreak, the game was again equal, but at the very end the Bulgarian made a decisive mini-break and returned to the match after 7:5 points.
In the third set, Tomova led with a break and 4:3, and at 5:4 she missed a match point, resulting in a 5:5 tie.
In the decisive and final game, the Bulgarian tennis player had a 4:0 and 6:1 lead, and could not take advantage of five more consecutive points to end the match.
The Sofia player awaits the draw on Friday for the British Open, which begins on June 30 in London.
