US President Donald Trump has ordered the introduction of tariffs on imports of wood and certain wood products into the United States.
According to documents published by the White House, 10% tariffs will be applied to imports of wood, including softwood, proportional to the value of the goods. Tariffs of 25% will be applied to certain types of furniture, including kitchen furniture. The new measures take effect on October 14. Tariffs may increase after January 1, 2026.
On August 22, Trump announced that the Washington administration was conducting an investigation into furniture imports from other countries into the United States. As he noted at the time, after the investigation, these products would be subject to tariffs. The head of state expressed confidence that “this will bring back the furniture business to North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan and other states“.
Among the largest exporters of furniture to the United States are Vietnam, Canada, China and Mexico.
