Odessa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov has been stripped of his citizenship. According to sources from the BBC Ukrainian Service, the decision was made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The reason for this is that the mayor holds a Russian passport - an allegation that Trukhanov denies.
Zelensky reported that he had held a security meeting, at which the head of the SBU, Vasyl Malyuk, reported on "the counteraction of Russian intelligence networks and collaborators in the frontline areas and in the south".
According to the Ukrainian leader, "the Russian citizenship of some individuals has been confirmed". He signed a decree revoking their Ukrainian citizenship.
Zelensky did not name them in his social media post, but a source for the BBC Ukrainian service in government structures said he also had in mind Odessa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov.
Ukrainian media reported that the same decree stripped former Verkhovna Rada deputy Oleg Tsarev and ballet dancer Sergei Polunin of Ukrainian citizenship.
