New Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa will meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Moscow today to discuss developing cooperation between the two countries.
The Syrian embassy confirmed to reporters that al-Sharaa will lead the Syrian delegation participating in the upcoming Russian-Arab summit.
The new Syrian authorities have expressed interest in allowing Russian military police patrols to return to the country. This was reported by sources who attended the meeting between Syrian Foreign Minister Asad al-Shibani and representatives of the Syrian diaspora in Moscow.
According to insiders, this initiative may be motivated by the desire to prevent “Israeli interference in Syrian affairs“.
Earlier, at a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, al-Shibani expressed gratitude to his colleagues for their readiness to open a new chapter in cooperation between the two countries.
We are starting a dialogue that is of great importance, as it determines the present and the future. Relations between our countries are historic and are now on the right track. We are restoring the economy and we need friends, said Asad al-Shibani.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Israeli attacks on Syrian territory grossly violate international law. The ministry condemned the intensive strikes by the Israeli air force in the southern region and Damascus, which targeted government institutions, including the Defense Ministry complex and the presidential palace in the capital.
Damascus is counting on Moscow's help in the country's post-war reconstruction, the foreign minister said. According to him, Russia's open support for the new path that Syria has taken will be a step in the interests of the republic and the entire region.
In March, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed that Putin had sent a message to the new leadership of Syria. In it, the Russian leader expressed his readiness to cooperate with them "on the entire range of issues on the bilateral agenda."
