German government spokesman Stefan Cornelius described the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as constructive, after the Ukrainian leader held a phone call with European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, after his meeting with Trump, DPA reported, BTA reported.
Merz and other European leaders were reported to have welcomed "close transatlantic cooperation" and stressed the need to achieve a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.
"Ukraine now needs a peace plan," Merz said after the call with Zelensky.
The German government said European leaders had pledged support for Ukraine, with the aim of pushing Russia into serious negotiations. Measures in this direction include strengthening sanctions and using frozen Russian state assets.
"Volodymyr Zelensky has the full support of Germany and our European friends on the path to peace," Merz said, noting that the leaders had coordinated after Zelensky's meeting with Trump and that they would closely monitor what happens next.
Zelensky's conversation with European leaders was also attended by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and heads of European institutions.
