The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has launched an investigation after allegations that Russian hackers stole hundreds of military documents and published them on the dark web, the BBC reports, quoted by Focus.
According to a publication by The Mail on Sunday, the files contain data on eight Royal Air Force and Navy bases, as well as names and emails of MoD employees.
In an official statement, the Ministry states that it is “actively investigating allegations of published information related to the ministry“. The MoD added that “in order to protect the content of the leaked information, no further details will be provided“.
The documents include sensitive data for bases such as RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, where the US Air Force's F-35 fighter jets are based.
A spokesman for Dodd Group confirmed that the company had suffered an incident with one of its software products, in which an unauthorised third party had temporarily gained access to its internal systems. “We took immediate action to contain the situation, secured the systems and engaged an IT forensics firm to investigate what had happened,“ he said.
The hack comes after a series of data breaches at the British MoD. Last year, the personal information of an unknown number of active service members was made available online in a similar leak.
