Sanae Takaichi has been elected as Japan's prime minister, becoming the first woman to hold the post in the country's history, the Japanese Kyodo news agency reported, BTA reports.
Sixty-four-year-old Takaichi, who previously served as interior minister and was responsible for economic security, received the support of 237 deputies in the 465-seat House of Representatives (lower house of parliament – Shugiin).
Takaichi heads the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which a day earlier reached a coalition agreement with the Japan Restoration Party, securing a solid parliamentary majority.
