In a large-scale operation, Poland and Romania have arrested eight people in connection with an alleged Russian plan to carry out sabotage through explosives shipments, RMF24 reports.
Tuesday's arrests target a new alleged scheme involving explosive packages aimed at Ukraine, marking a critical development in the current security challenges.
The prosecutor's office in Poland has launched an investigation into Russian intelligence activities against the country after several suspects tried to send parcels with explosives and incendiary materials to Ukraine, via courier services in Bucharest.
This became known after Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that the Internal Security Agency, in cooperation with other services, had detained eight people, suspected of preparing acts of sabotage in recent days.
According to the conclusions of the investigators, a group of people working for the Russian special services were preparing acts of sabotage until October 16, which consisted of sending parcels with explosives and incendiary materials to Ukraine.
According to the prosecutor's office, the parcels were supposed to self-ignite or explode during transportation. The planned actions were aimed at intimidating the population and destabilizing the EU countries that support Ukraine. However, the packages were intercepted by Romanian authorities before the explosion occurred.
In connection with this case, one of the senders of the packages - Danilo G. - was detained in Poland, and two Ukrainian citizens who collaborated with the suspect were also detained in Romania.
Romanian authorities announced that it was the two Ukrainians, aged 21 and 24, who delivered packages with improvised explosive devices to a courier service in Bucharest.
A Ukrainian citizen suspected of collaborating with Russian intelligence services was also arrested in Poland as part of an alleged sabotage campaign, the countries' prosecutors announced today.
According to the investigation, Danilo G. acted together with other individuals, carrying out tasks assigned by the Russian special services. On October 17, the Warsaw District Court ordered the suspect to be detained for three months.
A Romanian court ordered the suspects to be detained in the country for 30 days.
A spokesman for the coordinator of Polish special services, Jacek Dobrzyński, said that in recent months, officers of the Internal Security Agency had detained a total of 55 people who had acted to the detriment of Poland and in the interests of Russian intelligence.
In August, Poland charged a Belarusian citizen who wanted to cooperate with the Belarusian KGB and participate in sabotage in the EU.
It was also reported that charges had been brought against a 27-year-old Colombian who may be behind two arson attacks in Poland.
Tusk said that the authorities would act ruthlessly against those who plan to destabilize the situation in the country.
