US President Donald Trump canceled his meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin after Moscow sent Washington a memorandum with demands regarding Ukraine. This was reported by the Financial Times newspaper, citing sources.
"The United States canceled President Donald Trump's planned meeting with Vladimir Putin in Budapest after Russia's memorandum containing tough demands regarding Ukraine was followed by a tense telephone conversation between senior diplomats from both countries,“ the publication said in a statement.
As the newspaper specifies, the memorandum was sent to the United States a few days after the conversation between Putin and Trump on October 16. In the document, the Russian Foreign Ministry outlined its demands for Ukraine: territorial concessions, a sharp reduction in the size of Ukraine's armed forces, and guarantees that it would never join NATO.
As the FT reports, Trump was "not impressed" by Moscow's position.
On October 23, Trump said he had canceled a meeting with Putin. According to the US president, it seemed to him that he would not be able to "achieve what was needed" during these talks.
