France has completed the modernization cycle of its nuclear missiles with the commissioning of the "ASMPA-R" missile (improved medium-range air-to-surface missile), which will be used by the Strategic Air and Sea Forces, the French Ministry of the Armed Forces announced, quoted by Agence France-Presse, reports News.bg.
The French nuclear deterrent now has modernized missiles for submarines, "Rafale" fighters, as well as for the air force, space force and navy.
Minister of the Armed Forces Catherine Vautrin welcomed the successful test of "ASMPA-R" without a nuclear charge, launched by a "Rafale" fighter jet of the Navy. The decision to put the missiles into service was signed by Vautrin on Monday. According to the ministry, the missile test completes the operation to improve the air component of the French nuclear deterrent.
The Strategic Air and Sea Action Force consists of "Rafale" fighters, capable of detecting and delivering "nuclear fire" from an aircraft carrier. The other component of the deterrent comes from the Strategic Air Forces of the Air and Space Forces.
At the end of last month, the ministry announced the introduction of a new version of intercontinental ballistic missiles deployed on nuclear submarines, which constitute the maritime component of France's nuclear deterrent.
Like all nuclear-armed countries that are constantly modernizing their weapons, France is already developing a fourth-generation air-to-surface missile, expected to enter service in 2035, as well as the "M51.4" ballistic missile.
In recent months, the situation around nuclear weapons has deteriorated due to Russia's tests of new weapons, statements by former US President Donald Trump about possible nuclear weapons tests and the continuous strengthening of China's nuclear power, AFP notes.
The head of the general staff of the French armed forces, General Fabien Mandon indicated that the situation was disturbing, highlighting the unusually high level of aggressive rhetoric.
