The Palestinian Authority (PA) called today for the immediate implementation of the UN Security Council resolution that supports US President Donald Trump's peace plan for the Gaza Strip, thus clearly distinguishing itself from the position of the Palestinian Islamist group “Hamas“, DPA reported, BTA reports.
In a statement released by the Palestinian news agency “Wafa“, the PA stressed the need for urgent implementation of the resolution in order to protect the population in the enclave, prevent new displacements, ensure the full withdrawal of Israeli troops, enable the reconstruction of the severely damaged territory and support the solution for the coexistence of two states - Palestine and Israel.
Trump's peace plan calls for the disarmament of "Hamas" - the PA's main competitor for influence among the Palestinians - and the deployment of international peacekeeping forces in Gaza. It also calls for the appointment of a transitional administration led by non-partisan Palestinians, DPA notes.
The Palestinian Authority, headed by Mahmoud Abbas, has expressed its readiness to cooperate with the United States, the European Union, Muslim countries and UN Security Council members to implement the resolution in a way that will alleviate the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
According to the PA, the path to sustainable peace between Israelis and Palestinians must be based on the two-state solution, which envisages the creation of an independent Palestinian state, peacefully coexisting with Israel.
„Hamas“ for its part rejects the two-state solution and calls for the destruction of Israel and the establishment of an Islamic state within the borders of historic Palestine. The Israeli government also opposes such a solution, believing that a future Palestinian state would threaten the country's security and accusing the PA of encouraging terrorism in the Gaza Strip.
