NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed US President Donald Trump's efforts regarding the US plan to end the war in Ukraine today during a visit to Iceland, Agence France-Presse reported, BTA reported.
"Russia paid a high price for small gains, and Ukraine continues to defend itself courageously", Rutte stressed at a joint press conference with Icelandic Prime Minister Kristún Frostádóttir.
"The peace process is enjoying a significant boost of energy and I want to congratulate US President Trump for this", he added.
Presented last week, the US plan, considered a concession to Russian demands, was significantly changed after urgent talks between the US and Ukraine, in which European countries also participated, notes AFP.
US envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to arrive in Moscow next week to discuss the plan with Russian officials. The Kremlin has described European efforts on the plan as "pointless".
A focus during the NATO Secretary General's visit to Iceland is ensuring the security of the alliance countries, especially in the Arctic region, according to Agence France-Presse.
