A nationwide strike will be held in Italy today, organized by the leading trade union organizations, Italian publications recall.
The strike actions will last 24 hours and in many places there are expected to be accompanying demonstrations.
The strike also affects national rail transport, as the strike actions there began last night at 9 p.m. local time and will continue until 9 p.m. local time tonight. According to the legislation, however, there will be guaranteed trains in certain time zones and providing interregional connections.
The strike will also affect local urban transport, as there are also guaranteed time zones in which vehicles should operate. These time zones vary by region and city.
Taxis will not be on strike.
Airline ground staff and airport employees will be involved in the strike, which could lead to delays or cancellations of flights. Air transport also has guaranteed time zones in which flights operate, with passengers being asked to check the status of their flights.
Teachers are also joining the strike, which could lead to disruption to the educational process.
There will also be strikes in healthcare, but emergency operations will be carried out, as well as other more essential health activities. But because of the strike, patients with pre-booked appointments may be redirected to another date.
The reasons for the nationwide strike are the measures set out in the draft budget for next year. The strikers are demanding more investment in education, healthcare and transport and a drastic reduction in defense spending, writes “Messajero“. They are demanding decent pay, indexation of pensions to inflation, and a bill on a minimum hourly wage.
The organizers of the strike are also calling for an end to military support for the State of Israel and solidarity with the struggle of the Palestinian people.
The strike is also being organized against the wage gap between men and women, against the privatization of energy companies, post offices, telecommunications companies, public transport companies, and against privatization in the fields of environmental protection, healthcare, and the education system.
There have been several similar nationwide strikes in Italy since the beginning of autumn.
The next one is scheduled for December 12.
