The Russian Central Bank has filed a lawsuit against Belgian central depository Euroclear, seeking compensation in the amount of 18.2 trillion rubles (196 billion euros), a Moscow court said, citing Reuters, reports News.bg.
The Moscow court is expected to quickly rule in favor of the central bank, which will then be able to seek enforcement of the decision in other countries.
The lawsuit is filed in response to European Union plans to use frozen Russian assets - most of which are held in Euroclear - to finance Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
On December 12, the EU announced its intention to indefinitely freeze the assets of the Russian central bank held in Europe, removing one of the main obstacles to their use to support Ukraine.
