Axios: Rutte proposes US to deploy Golden Dome in Greenland, but island to remain Danish - 1

The Greenland agreement being discussed between US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte includes Danish sovereignty over the island, Axios reported, citing two sources.

Rutte’s proposal to Trump would update the 1951 Greenland Defense Agreement between the US and Denmark, which allows the US to build military bases on the island if NATO deems it appropriate.

The proposed deal by the NATO secretary general also includes the deployment of the US “Golden Dome” system in Greenland, increased alliance activity in the Arctic region, enhanced security for Greenland and “additional work on raw materials“. Another clause in the agreement would counter “malign external influence“ from Russia and China in the area around the island.

On the evening of January 21, Trump announced that “based on a very productive meeting“ with the NATO Secretary General, the foundation had been laid for a future agreement on Greenland, as well as for the entire Arctic region. After these talks, the American leader also announced that he would not impose tariffs on the eight European countries that opposed Greenland's accession to the United States. In a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos the same day, the American leader stated that the United States would not use military force to gain control of the island.

“The New York Times“, citing its sources, reported that the Greenland agreement with the United States could include small areas of the island. As part of the agreement, the United States could establish military bases there.
