Afghan military authorities said they had launched strikes on Pakistan in response to Pakistani airstrikes several days ago, the Associated Press reported.
A statement issued by the media office of the Afghan military forces in the eastern part of the country said that "heavy clashes began tonight in response to the latest airstrikes carried out by Pakistani forces in Nangarhar and Paktia provinces".
There was no immediate confirmation from Pakistan of the attack or any casualties.
"In response to repeated provocations and violations by Pakistani military circles, large-scale offensive operations have been launched against Pakistani military positions and facilities along the Durand Line" (the international border between the two countries, which Afghanistan does not officially recognize - ed.), Afghan Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told "Ex", quoted by Reuters.
On Sunday, the Pakistani army carried out strikes along the border with Afghanistan, saying the airstrikes targeted camps of "Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan" and a local branch of "Islamic State" in eastern Afghanistan, with security sources saying at least 70 militants were killed.
Afghanistan rejects Islamabad's claims, saying dozens of civilians, including women and children, were killed in the attacks.
