Romania scrambled four fighter jets today after the Ministry of National Defense detected the presence of two drones near the border with Ukraine, with one of them briefly entering national airspace, reports Agerpres.
"The radars of the Ministry of National Defense detected today the presence of a drone near the state border with Ukraine following a new attack by the Russian Federation against Ukrainian ports on the Danube. Thus, at around 16:25, two F-16 aircraft stationed at the Fetești airbase were taken off the ground in accordance with airspace security procedures," the ministry said in a statement, specifying that the population in Tulcea County had received a warning through the RO-Alert system through the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations.
According to the ministry, the drone did not enter Romanian airspace, and the alert measures were lifted around 17:30.
Later, at around 18:00, two "Eurofighter Typhoon" aircraft - one of the German Air Force and the other of the Spanish - were taken off from the 57th Air Base "Mihail Cogalnicanu" in Constanta County after another drone was detected heading towards national airspace. The population of Tulcea was again notified via the RO-Alert system, the ministry said.
"The aircraft briefly entered national airspace, leaving it around 6:30 p.m. north of Sulina", the ministry noted.
Last night, two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled from the Fetești military base in Romania due to a drone that briefly entered the country's airspace, the Romanian Ministry of National Defense announced. The aircraft was detected in the area of Sfantu Gheorghe in Tulcea County and quickly moved north of the town of Sulina, the ministry said.
