Poland believes that Orban has been providing detailed information to Russia about EU Council meetings for years - 1

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said last night in connection with an article in the “Washington Post“ that Poland “had suspicions“ that the Hungarian government has been providing detailed information to Russia about EU Council meetings for years, the Associated Press reported.

The publication, citing several current and former European security officials, reported that the Hungarian government, led by Viktor Orban, has long provided Moscow with access to discussions on sensitive topics in the European Union.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has regularly held talks during breaks in EU Council meetings to provide his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov with “direct reports on the discussions“ and to discuss possible solutions, the “Washington Post“ reported.

“The news that Orban's people have been informing Moscow in detail about EU Council meetings should come as no surprise to anyone,“ the Polish prime minister wrote on the social network Ex. "We have had our suspicions about this for a long time. That is one of the reasons why I only speak when strictly necessary and say as much as necessary," he added.

Szijjártó, for his part, responded to Tusk's comments in Aix, calling them "fake news."

"Fake news, as usual. You are telling lies to support the Tisza party and establish a pro-war puppet government in Hungary. You will not get it," Szijjártó wrote.

Tisza is the main opposition party in Hungary, which is currently leading in the polls, three weeks before parliamentary elections.

Relations between Warsaw and Budapest have been strained after Hungary blocked European aid to Ukraine and maintained close ties with Russia, the AP recalls.
