Convicted Iranian Nobel Peace Laureate Admitted to Hospital After 'Heart Attack' - 1

Convicted Iranian Nobel Peace Laureate Narges Mohammadi has been rushed to hospital with a “heart attack“, Reuters reported, citing a statement from her family-run foundation.

The secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which awarded Mohammadi the 2023 prize, expressed concern earlier this week that the Iranian human rights activist's condition was deteriorating after she suffered a heart attack in prison.

Mohammadi, in her 50s, won the prize while in prison for her campaign to promote women's rights and abolish the death penalty in Iran.

The activist “was urgently transferred to a hospital in the city of Zanjan today after a catastrophic deterioration in her health, including two cases of complete loss of consciousness and an acute heart attack“, the Narges Mohammadi Foundation said in a statement published on its website today.

Reuters could not immediately confirm the information in the statement. The statement added that her transfer to the hospital was a “desperate last-minute measure“ that may have come too late.”

Mohammadi was sentenced to 7 and a half years in prison, the foundation said in February - weeks before the United States and Israel launched their war on Iran, BTA recalls. The Nobel Committee at the time called on Tehran to release her immediately.”

She was arrested in December after condemning the death of lawyer Khosrow Alikordi, and according to the prosecutor's office during the memorial ceremony for him called on those present to “chant obscene slogans“ and “disturb public order“.

According to the foundation of the same name, Mohammadi collapsed yesterday morning after days of dangerously high blood pressure and severe nausea, and was transferred to the prison infirmary for emergency intravenous infusions.

According to her family, she faces a “direct” threat to her right to life. “We call for all charges to be immediately dropped and all sentences imposed for her peaceful human rights work to be unconditionally overturned,“ it added.
