An earthquake shook densely populated New York this morning (local time), the US Geophysical Institute reported. Local residents on the Eastern coast of the country say that they felt a rumble, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.
Seismologists report that, according to preliminary data, the earthquake has a magnitude of 4.7 with an epicenter near the city of Lebanon in the state of New Jersey [about 70 km. from Manhattan – note ed.]. The Fire Department of New York reported that there were no initial reports of damage.
In midtown Manhattan, the usual cacophony of traffic intensified as drivers honked their horns on the swaying streets. Some Brooklyn residents reported hearing a boom and feeling buildings shake.
Residents in Baltimore, Philadelphia and other nearby cities also reported feeling the ground shaking.
New York Governor Cathy Hawkel wrote on her page on the social network “X“ that an assessment of the impact of the earthquake and possible damage is currently being made.
