The husband of former Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon – Peter Murrell, has been re-arrested as part of the investigation into the finances of the Scottish National Party, police said, AFP and Associated Press reported, citing BTA.
Murrell, 59, who was director-general of the SNP until mid-March 2023, was already arrested last year in this investigation into the use of £600,000 (€683,000) in donations raised in recent years to organize a new referendum on Scottish independence.
Murrell was subsequently released without charge.
He was "arrested again today and is being questioned by Police Scotland investigators," a police statement said.
The inquiry into the finances of the SNP was made public shortly after Nicola Sturgeon's surprise resignation as Prime Minister in February 2023.
She herself was arrested in June for questioning and declared her innocence. No charges were brought against her either.
Peter Murrell has had to resign from the leadership of the SNP, where he was a member for 20 years, amid disputes over the party's membership numbers during the internal campaign to appoint a new leader.
The SNP has been in turmoil since the departure of its charismatic leader, who was succeeded by Humza Yousaf, and is now under threat from a strong Labor comeback after general elections later this year.
