Trump: Ukraine's survival important to US

Former president changes tone before House votes on $61 billion in aid

Donald Trump says Ukraine's survival is important to US and shows change of tone just before the Republican-controlled US House of Representatives votes on aid worth $61 billion, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

The former US president did not endorse the package, but devoted most of his post on his platform “Truth Social” of his disagreement that America's European allies are not providing enough funds to support Ukraine. Some far-right Republicans interpreted Trump's post as a signal that he opposes the aid package for Kiev, although the former president did not say so explicitly.

Still, the post appears to be one of Trump's first acknowledgments that Ukraine's survival is important to the US in terms of its security interests.

Last year, Trump refused to say in a conversation on CNN whether he wanted Ukraine to win the war with Russia.

„Why can't Europe give the same amount of money invested by the US to help a country that desperately needs it?", Trump wrote yesterday in “Truth Social”.

„As everyone agrees, Ukrainian survival and strength should be much more important to Europe than to us, but it is also important to us! Get Europe moving!“

Trump's post came a day after he praised Poland in a meeting at “Trump Tower” in New York with Polish President Andrzej Duda. The former president and the Polish leader discussed Duda's proposal that NATO countries spend at least 3% of their gross domestic product on defense. They are currently required to spend at least 2% of GDP on defense.

Speaker of the US House of Representatives – Rep. Mike Johnson said the House would vote on the Ukraine aid package as early as Saturday despite fierce right-wing objections among his party members.
