Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced that he will not leave his post despite hints of resignation after the launch of a corruption investigation against his wife, reported Reuters and News.bg.
Sánchez earlier met with King Felipe VI, a step that would have been necessary if he had decided to resign. However, the prime minister announced in a televised address that he had informed the monarch of his decision to stay. He was encouraged to stay by the widespread expressions of support over the weekend, Sanchez added.
"I decided to continue, if possible even stronger as Prime Minister. This is not the usual work, things will be different", he declared in a national broadcast.
The prime minister surprised both the opposition and his allies when he announced last week that he was canceling all public engagement events to consider leaving. He described the judicial investigation of his wife Begona Gomez for influence peddling and business corruption as orchestrated by his opponents.
We also remind you that the court started a preliminary investigation against the wife of the prime minister, Begonya Gomes, for trading in influence and corruption. The actions began following a complaint by the anti-corruption campaign "Manos Limpias", whose leader has ties to the extreme right. They believe Gomez used her influence to secure sponsors for a university master's course she ran.
