Floods killed more than 300 people in Africa - 1

More than 300 people have died in floods in Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi and Uganda, and the heavy rains that hit East Africa do not stop, DPA reported , quoted by BTA.

169 people have died in Kenya alone, a government spokesman announced today. The Cabinet in Nairobi earlier met in a special meeting to discuss measures to deal with the deadly floods and related nuisances.

During his visit to Mai Mahiu in the East African Rift Valley, where yesterday after a dam burst, nearly 50 people died and 26 are still missing, Kenyan President William Ruto said that residents of areas threatened by floods or landslides, must move to a safe place within 48 hours.

According to the country's meteorological service, more heavy rainfall is expected in Kenya over the next seven days.

Roads have been blocked and bridges have become impassable, hampering the movement of goods between countries in the region, such as between Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In Tanzania, coastal areas are particularly at risk, which are exposed not only to torrential rainfall, but also to powerful thunderstorms and large waves. At the same time, there have been numerous landslides in recent days in the Arusha and Manyara regions, popular tourist destinations for safari tours, DPA notes.
