After Island vote: Labor hails 'phenomenal result', PM Sunak 'disappointing' - 1

The agency notes that while the re-election of Sadiq Khan as mayor of the British capital London was expected, Labor recorded a surprising victory in the central region of the West Midlands, whose center is the second largest English city of Birmingham.

These are successive victories for Labor in Thursday's local elections and they give clear signs to Sunak to step down as prime minister, according to Reuters.

The agency points to the fact that opinion polls predict a victory for Labor in the national election, giving hopes to its leader Keir Starmer that he can end 14 years of Tory rule.

The prime minister's running mate, Andy Street, lost in the West Midlands to Labour's Richard Parker, who beat him by 37.8 to 37.5 per cent of the local vote. The difference in votes is 1,508, notes Reuters.

"I think a Labor mayor running with a Labor government will be able to help Britain get its future back," Parker said after the results came out.

"The shock victory in the West Midlands is a phenomenal result that has exceeded our expectations," Labor leader Starmer was quoted as saying by DPA.

For his part, Sunak described the double loss in London and the West Midlands as "disappointing".

„People across the country are fed up with the chaos and decline of the Conservatives. They voted to change with Labour. Our fantastic new Mayor, Richard Parker, is ready to make a fresh start for the West Midlands”, added Keir Starmer.

He addressed voters who turned away from Labor over its stance on the Gaza conflict, saying he was determined to win back their trust in the future, DPA said.

Reuters notes that Prime Minister Sunak had hoped for success in the election because of increased defense spending and the progress of his plan to deport migrants to Rwanda.
