Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash, authorities in the Islamic Republic announced earlier today.
The following is a reference by Reuters, quoted by BTA, what is the constitutional procedure when an acting head of state is no longer able to fulfill his duties or dies during his term:
If the president dies during his term, Article 131 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic provides that the first vice president – in the case of Mohammad Mohber – to take over his functions. His appointment as interim president must be approved by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say on all matters of state in Iran.
A council composed of the first vice president, the speaker of parliament and the head of the judiciary must organize new presidential elections to be held within 50 days.
Raisi was elected in 2021, so the next regular presidential election should have been in 2025. Given the constitutional deadlines, the early vote can be expected to take place in early July.
