The current president of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda convincingly wins today's second round of the elections for the head of state, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA, citing official results at this stage of ballot counting.
Nauseda, who was the favorite in the runoff against Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonite, was supported by 81.7 percent of voters in 29 percent of the ballots counted, Reuters noted.
Nauseda received the largest share of the vote in the May 12 first round of elections and had a significant lead, but not enough to give him the absolute majority needed to outright defeat Shimonis. In 2019, the two politicians also faced each other for the presidency.
Most Lithuanians expected the 60-year-old economist Nauseda, who gained popularity as a staunch supporter of Ukraine, to get a second five-year term.
