Ex-mayor shoots three in South Dakota - 1

Three people were shot in a small South Dakota town, and a former law enforcement officer who was once mayor of the city, is accused of the murders, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.

Jay Ostrem, 64, is being held on $1 million bail on three counts of first-degree murder, South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley said.

The victims have been identified as two brothers aged 26 and 21 and a 35-year-old man.

Ostrem worked in law enforcement for more than two decades in Wyoming and South Dakota, media reports said. About a decade and a half ago, he served as mayor of Centerville, but the exact dates were not immediately known.

The probable cause affidavit says a Centerville man called police at 9:44 p.m. Monday to report that his brother had been shot by "a person on the other side of the street“ and that the shooter had gone home. The caller was still on the phone with the dispatcher when he said he had also been shot. Then he stopped talking.

Any relationship between the third victim and the brothers has not been indicated.

Ostrem was arrested a little later. There was a rifle on the ground near him, and a pistol in his pocket, the document states.

Officers then went to the home where the call came from and found the three victims.
