The ruling party in Mexico MORENA and the media announced Claudia Scheinbaum as the winner of the presidential elections in the country on Sunday, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.
NMAS TV and the newspaper “Financiero“ announced that their exit polls showed Scheinbaum the winner, but did not provide specific poll data.
MORENA leader Mario Delgado told supporters in the Mexican capital that Sheinbaum was winning by a “big” lead.
The biggest election in Mexico's history, in which nearly 20 thousand officials are to be elected, is also the bloodiest in the country's modern history. During the campaign, 38 candidates were killed, including a local candidate who was fatally shot on Saturday. The violence has heightened concern about the impact of warring drug cartels on democracy.
On election day, two people were killed in polling stations in the state of Puebla.
Sheinbaum, who also convincingly led in public opinion polls before the election over her main rival Sochitel Galvez, will have the difficult task of confronting the violence of organized crime.
If her election is confirmed by the official results, Sheinbaum will become the first female president of Mexico.
The new president will take office on October 1.
