Sweden released the convicted former Iranian official Hamid Nouri, it was reported today in "Ex" Iran's chief human rights representative Kazem Gharib Abadi, quoted by Reuters and BTA=
He said Nouri, who was convicted of his involvement in a 1988 mass execution of political prisoners in Iran, would return to his homeland within hours.
For his part, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced that Swedish citizens Johan Floderus and Saeed Azizi, who were detained in Iran, are returning to Sweden.
"Iran is using them as pawns in a negotiation game to get Iranian citizen Hamid Nouri released from prison in Sweden. "He was convicted of serious crimes committed in Iran in the 1980s," Christershon said. "As Prime Minister, I have a special responsibility for the safety of Swedish citizens. The government is therefore working intensively on this matter, together with the Swedish security services, which are negotiating with Iran," he added.
Nuri, 63, was arrested at Stockholm airport in 2019 and later sentenced to life in prison for war crimes for the 1988 mass execution and torture of political prisoners in a prison in Iran. He denies the charges.
Floderus was arrested in Iran in 2022 and charged with espionage for Israel and other serious crimes, which carries the death penalty.
