Russia wants a new cooperation agreement with Iran - 1

Moscow hopes to sign a new comprehensive cooperation agreement with Iran "in the very near future" ;, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA, referring to an interview of Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Rudenko for the RIA news agency.

"We expect this agreement to be signed in the very near future as work on the text will soon be completed. All the necessary formulations were found," said Rudenko.

Earlier this month, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that work on the agreement was temporarily suspended, and Iran said there was no pause in the preparation of the new agreement, Reuters recalls.

Russia and Iran signed a 20-year strategic agreement in 2001, which was automatically extended by five years in 2020.

The two sides agreed in 2020 to work on a new agreement to replace the old document.

The 2001 agreement provided for cooperation in security, energy projects, including cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy and the construction of nuclear power plants, industry and technology.
