The roof of the main airport in the Indian capital, Delhi, collapsed due to heavy rains and strong winds, Reuters reported, citing of local authorities and media. One person died and flights from one terminal were cancelled, BTA reported.
A part of the roof of the departures area of Terminal 1 collapsed at around 5am local time (11:30pm GMT), the airport said in a statement posted on the “X“ social network.
"There are reports of injuries and emergency crews are working to provide the necessary aid and medical attention to those injured," the statement said.
Televisions reported that three people were injured and one was buried under the collapsed roof. All departing flights from the terminal, which serves the low-cost companies “IndiGo“ (IndiGo) and “SpiceJet” (SpiceJet), are canceled until 2 p.m. local time (08:30 GMT), the statement added.
Media footage showed water gushing from the collapsed roof and a taxi pinned under one of the pillars, as torrential rain continued to fall over the area, flooding roads and causing traffic jams. India's Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said he was monitoring the situation and the first rescue teams were already on the ground.
