France elects new parliament - 1

In France today, the first round of early elections for the National Assembly are being produced and President Emmanuel Macron is seeking to increase the relative majority with which so far his party "Renaissance" had the lower house of the parliament, reports DPA, quoted by BTA.

Voting stations open at 8:00 a.m. local time (9:00 a.m. Bulgarian time), with 49.3 million people eligible to vote, and voting has already begun in a number of overseas territories.

Macron called early elections after the far-right party "National Assembly" achieved considerable success in the vote for the European Parliament. According to the results of public opinion polls "National Assembly" ahead of the newly formed left-wing coalition "New Popular Front", and Macron's party remains in third place.

If "National Assembly" secured a majority in the 577-member legislature, Macron will have to appoint a far-right prime minister.

Candidates who receive an absolute majority in the first round automatically become MPs, but in most constituencies the winner will not be clear until the second round on July 7.

Macron's second and final term ends in 2027 and his post is not threatened by snap elections for the National Assembly, but the new composition of parliament will have a major impact on the remaining three years of his term.
