Today the bustling resort town of Marmaris, located in the Turkish district of Mugla, suffered an earthquake. The earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 was confirmed by the Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD), BTA reported.
The earthquake occurred at 12:11 p.m. Its epicenter was in the city of Marmaris itself, at a depth of 6.89 kilometers.
The earthquake startled the residents and tourists in the resort.
Minister of the Interior Ali Yerlikaya said that at the moment there are no data on negative consequences after the earthquake, informs the electronic edition of the city “Hurriet”, quoted by BTA.
He indicated that AFAD (Directorate for Disaster and Emergency Management) teams are conducting a field survey.
The well-known Turkish seismologist Prof. Dr. Şükrü Ersoy pointed out that although residents and guests of Marmaris are scared by the earthquake, it is not a concern. He added that he has been studying faults in the area for 30 years and earthquakes like this one (magnitude 4.4) are a normal occurrence. According to him, today's earthquake is unlikely to be preceded by a stronger tremor, Hurriet informs.
