< p>Former President of the United States Donald Trump is considering possibly reducing the exchange of intelligence information with members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
This was revealed by Politico, citing foreign officials briefed on these possible plans.
According to three European officials and one senior NATO official, Trump's advisers have notified US allies that such a move would be part of a broader plan to reduce US support for the alliance.
"It was American intelligence that helped convince many NATO countries that Putin was determined to invade Ukraine.
Some countries did not believe that Russia had the capabilities to conduct a successful military campaign," one of the officials noted, hinting at the importance of intelligence sharing.
A reduction in US-NATO intelligence sharing could reduce Europe's ability to resist a Russian invasion if President Vladimir Putin decides to expand his military operations on the continent beyond Ukraine, the top US official said.
Reached for comment, a Trump campaign spokesman did not respond directly, referring to a statement on TruthSocial that the former president would "restore peace and rebuild American strength and deterrence on the world stage.
Limiting intelligence under a possible future Trump administration was a topic of discussion at a NATO summit this week, according to the officials, as well as a senior US official.
During his first term as president, Trump made controversial statements on this issue. Then he managed to convince member countries to raise their defense spending.
