Britain will allocate £2 million to aid Sudanese refugees fleeing violence in western Darfur region, PA Media and DPA reported, citing referred to the Minister of Development, BTA specifies.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Commonwealth of Nations and Development, about 2 million people have fled Sudan because of the wave of violence that hit the country after the coup in April last year.
Development Minister Analise Dodds said the funds would represent a humanitarian response to the crisis in the hard-to-reach Alkfoura region in eastern Libya, where the UN says 45,000 refugees are in desperate need of help. The ministry said the decision is a reflection of the government's commitment to working with international partners who aim to address humanitarian crises forcing people to flee their homes.
The war in Sudan began in April last year when tensions between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force escalated into fighting across the country. More than 14,000 people were killed and at least 33,000 were injured, according to UN figures.
