Orban: If elected president, Trump will act as a peace broker between Russia and Ukraine - 1

US presidential candidate from the Republican Party, Donald Trump, is ready to act as a “mediator for a peace deal” between Ukraine and Russia, if he is elected in November, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in a letter to the leaders of the other member states of the European Union, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

The letter, addressed to European Council President Charles Michel and shared with all EU leaders, was drawn up after Orbán held talks with Trump as well as the leaders of Ukraine, Russia and China.

„I can certainly state that soon after winning the elections, he will not wait for his inauguration. Trump will be ready to act immediately as a peace broker. He has a detailed and well-founded plan, Orbán wrote.

Over the past two weeks, Orbán has made a series of visits to Kiev, Moscow and Beijing, as well as Trump's Florida estate, after his country took over the rotating EU presidency, angering allies.

In the letter, Orbán said that US President Joe Biden “is making tremendous efforts” to remain in the election race and believes that he is “incapable of changing the current American pro-war policy”.

Orban has long criticized Europe's military support for Ukraine, unlike most of his EU colleagues who support Kiev's military efforts.

The Hungarian leader said that a Trump victory would change the relationship between the EU and the US regarding the financial aid provided to Ukraine, with the burden shifting to the Europeans.

„Our European strategy in the name of transatlantic unity copies the pro-war policy of the USA. We currently have no sovereign and independent European strategy or political action plan. I propose to discuss whether the continuation of this policy is rational”, he added.

Orbán also proposed “the resumption of the direct line of diplomatic communication with Russia” while keeping contacts with Kiev at a high level, as well as holding talks with China “on the terms of the next peace conference”.
