A forest fire that broke out in the Turkish city of Izmir reached populated areas due to the strong wind, reports the TV channel A Haber, reports News.bg.

According to CNN Türk, the approaching fire necessitated the evacuation of the sheep pens. Residents of the affected areas tried to stop the fire themselves, using hoses to extinguish it before it reached their homes.

A local beekeeper told ODATV that about 80 beehives were burned, and only 20 managed to be saved.

Dozens of vehicles, including seven planes and 16 helicopters, are involved in fighting the fire. After dark, helicopters equipped with a night vision system arrived at the scene of the fire.

The fire broke out in the afternoon of July 18. Izmir International Airport operated with interruptions - departures were delayed for several hours and arriving flights were rerouted.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. In many parts of Turkey, temperatures have reached 40 degrees Celsius in recent days.
