The Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting current and former US presidents, was under pressure after a gunman managed to shoot Trump.

Cheatle, who has led the agency since 2022, said she took responsibility for the shooting, calling it the biggest failure of the "Secret Service" since Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981

Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, was grazed in the right ear and one rally attendee was killed in the shooting. The shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, was shot and killed by a Secret Service sniper.

The FBI said the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, lived with his parents in a quiet suburb and was a registered Republican.

Thomas Crooks had no identification on him and the investigation identified him through DNA.

After the attack, on Sunday night, the police cordoned off the Crooks' home along with the surrounding houses and urgently evacuated all their neighbors. The local police explained that this was due to the fact that explosive devices were found in the house.
