At least two children died and six more are in critical condition after yesterday's knife attack near a yoga class in the city of Southport in North-West England, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

Police in the north-west English county of Merseyside said a 17-year-old boy from Banks, born in Cardiff, had been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder following the "major incident" which happened at 11.50am local time yesterday property on "Hart" in Southport, north of Liverpool.

Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said that in addition to the two children who died, nine other children were injured in the "brutal" assault, and two adults are also in critical condition.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla paid tribute last night to the victims of the "truly horrific" knife attack in North West England.

Charles said he and the Queen were "deeply shocked" when they learned of the "utterly horrific incident in Southport".

"We send our sincerest condolences, prayers and deepest sympathy to the families and loved ones of those who so tragically lost their lives, and to all those affected by this truly horrific attack,'' King Charles III said.

The Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate, in turn said: "As parents we cannot imagine what the families, friends and loved ones of those killed and injured in Southport are going through.

"We send our love, thoughts and prayers to all involved in this horrific and despicable attack," they added.

After the police press conference last night, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer offered his condolences to the victims of the attack in Southport, to the families and friends of the victims and the injured, saying that "the whole country is deeply shocked" from what was seen.

Police did not say the ages of the children who died or whether they were boys or girls, and said they were not treating the incident as terrorism-related, but the motive "remains unclear.

British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said earlier yesterday that "the news from Southport is truly devastating.

"My heart goes out to all the families affected by this terrible incident and to the entire community," Cooper said.

All those injured are currently being treated in hospitals, including Liverpool and Manchester Children's Hospital.
