Senior Iranian officials will meet with representatives of their regional allies Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen to discuss potential retaliation against Israel for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. This was reported by the Reuters agency.
The meeting is expected to be attended by representatives of Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis and the Iraqi resistance movements. They will look for the "most efficient way" to take revenge on the Zionist regime. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and senior members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard will also be at the meeting.
After the assassination of Haniya and that of Hezbollah's top commander Fuad Shukr near Beirut, the risk of an escalation of the conflict in the Middle East increased.
Iran and Hamas accused Israel of carrying out the strike that killed Haniya hours after he attended the inauguration of Iran's new president in Tehran. Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack.
Israel, for its part, has indicated that it will respond with force if attacked.
Due to the assassination of Ismail Haniya, Iran convened an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.
