Access of Instagram users in Turkey to the social network remains blocked for the second day in a row.

Ankara announced on August 2 that the Meta-owned platform had been frozen without giving a reason.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said Instagram ignored government requests to remove certain posts.

"Our country has values and sensitivities. Despite our warnings, they did not address the criminal content. We have blocked access. "When they comply with our laws, we will lift the ban," he said.

The director of communications for the Turkish presidency, Fahrettin Altun, accused Instagram of censorship, saying the platform "prevents people from posting condolence messages for the martyr (Hamas leader Ismail) Haniya".

"This is a very clear and obvious attempt at censure," Altun wrote in X.

Hania, the political leader of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, was killed in Tehran this week in an attack blamed on Israel.

Erdogan decreed a national day of mourning in memory of Haniya, who played a key role in negotiations aimed at ending the nearly 10-month war in Gaza.

A source at Turkey's Information and Communications Technology Authority denied the move was due to Instagram blocking posts about Hania, explaining to the website Medyascope that it was due to "insults to Atatürk," the founding father of modern Turkey, and "crimes", including "drug games and pedophilia".

According to the Turkish media, 50 million of the total 85 million inhabitants of the country have an Instagram account.
