According to information received from Ukraine's Defense Express from informed sources, Russian troops used a North Korean-made ballistic missile in a massive attack on Ukraine. The launch was detected from the territory of the Russian Federation in the direction of Bila Tserkva, but the missile simply fell in the Kyiv region, probably after an explosion in the air.
Debris was found at the crash site with markings that match the previously discovered remains of KN-23 ballistic missiles used by the Russian Federation to strike Ukraine in early 2024. Photographs of this debris were obtained by Defense Express.
The Ukrainian media notes that the last recorded case of Russia's use of North Korean-made KN-23 ballistic missiles to strike Ukraine was on February 27, 2024.
Thus, it appears that Russian troops have resumed the use of long-range missile weapons by the DPRK after a 5-month hiatus.
"It is also worth noting that one of the watching public reported a possible launch of an enemy ballistic missile on the night of July 31, 2024 in the direction of Kyiv region. At the same time, it was assumed that an "Iskander-M" missile was likely to be used, but this was not officially confirmed, Defense Express added.
"The North Korean ballistic missiles that Russia has acquired for strikes against Ukraine have warheads with high explosives weighing up to 1,000 kg of TNT equivalent. The maximum range of these missiles is up to 650 kilometers," the publication states.
In May 2024, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office announced that experts had examined the remains of 21 of the 50 "North Korean ballistic missiles" that Russia had fired at Ukraine at the time. Remains of KN-23 were found in Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast, Donetsk, Kirovohrad, Poltava and Kharkiv Oblasts," Ukraine's prosecutor's office said at the time.
