French authorities evacuated the Eiffel Tower after a man was spotted climbing the historic landmark hours before the start of the Olympic closing ceremony in Paris, AP reported.
The shirtless man was spotted climbing the 330m tower this afternoon. It is not clear where he started his ascent, but he was spotted just above the Olympic rings mounted on the second level of the monument, just above the first observation deck.
The Eiffel Tower played a central role in the Games' opening ceremony, and Celine Dion sang from one of its observation decks. The tower is not expected to be part of the closing ceremony of the Games, which is expected to begin at the Stade de France. in the Saint-Denis area around 21:00 local time.
More than 30,000 police officers are deployed in and around Paris to guard the final Olympic events and the closing ceremony today.
