German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will visit Moldova today, where he will meet with President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Dorin Rechan, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

The main topic of the talks will be the impact of Russia's war against Ukraine on the small country with a population of about 2.6 million people.

The Moldovan government accuses Russia of disinformation campaigns and deliberate attempts to destabilize the state. Moscow has deployed its military in the separatist region of Transnistria.

Scholz visited Moldova last year in connection with a European summit, but his trip today represents the first bilateral visit by a German chancellor in 12 years.

Since 2018, Berlin has provided Chisinau with over 41 million euros in military aid, with Germany ranking fifth among the biggest donors to the Eastern European country.

In 2022, Moldova and its neighbor Ukraine received the status of candidate countries for EU membership.

In October of this year, Moldova will simultaneously hold presidential elections and a referendum on whether EU accession should be included as a goal in the Constitution.
